What types of payments can I use?
* For in-person transactions we accept cash, cashier’s checks, credit, debit, Visa or MasterCard as well as personal checks and money orders made payable to Mississippi Department of Public Safety.
* For all mail in renewals we accept personal checks, cashier's checks and money orders made payable to Mississippi Department of Public Safety.

Can I use my training from another state to get the enhanced endorsement on my firearm permit?
No, only training from an instructor certified by the MS Department of Public Safety or those with Military/Law Enforcement training as defined in MS Code Section 97-37-7(2)(b) are eligible to receive the enhanced endorsement on their Firearm Permit.

Do I need to have a picture on my application or will you take my picture?
Pictures and fingerprints are no longer required to be attached to the application. We will take your picture and fingerprint you in-person for 1st time applicants.

Do I need to have my application notarized before coming to the firearm permit office?
Yes, both first time and renewal applicants must have all applicable pages notarized.

Where can I get an FD-258 fingerprint card?
FD-258 FBI fingerprint cards can be obtained through online retailers.

Do I have to be fingerprinted for a firearm permit renewal?
Fingerprints are not required for renewals.

With what other states does Mississippi have reciprocity? (Whose permits do we honor, who honors ours?)
Mississippi recognizes valid, unrevoked and unexpired license to carry stun guns, concealed pistols, or revolvers issued in other states. How can I transport my handgun thru Mississippi while on vacation or just passing thru?
Mississippi Law Sec. 97-37-1 (2) states “It shall not be a violation of this section for any person over the age of eighteen (18) to carry a firearm or deadly weapon concealed in whole or in part within the confines of his own home or his place of business, or any real property associated with his home or business or within any motor vehicle”.

If I am 17 or older and have not taken the written test, do I have to wait one year before receiving my Driver License?
No. If you are over 17 you will not have a waiting period. You must pass the written permit test prior to receiving a DL but this can be done on the same day.

If my school closed early due to COVID-19 and I do not have the signed Certification of School Attendance form, what should I do?
If you do not have the Certification of School Attendance form, you may submit your last report card.

What if I never had a driver's license, am I still excused from the driving part of test?
At this time no road test are being given, you are only required to take the written exam.

What do I need to change my name on my DL or I.D?
Driver Service Bureau will only accept the below listed legal documents in order to change an applicant’s name on a driver’s license or identification card:
• Marriage License
• Divorce Decree
• Adoption Order
• Court Order

If my license is expired or suspended, do I have to retest?
If your license has been expired or suspended for over 60 months, you must take the written test over and apply for a new license.

How soon can I renew my license?
You may renew your license six months prior to the expiration date.

If my license is lost in the mail, will I have to pay for another one?
Yes, if your license gets lost after it has been mailed by the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, you will have to pay $11 to get a duplicate. DPS is not responsible for Driver's License that are lost in the mail.

Go back to the personal info page, make sure the information is entered correctly. (Only enter the DL number or the last 4 of your SSN). Must enter your first and last name (middle name and initials should be blank).

Once my driver's license has been validated by the agency, when will my credential be mailed?
Once your driver's license is validated, your credentials will be processed and mailed within 48 hours. Please allow 3-5 business days for receipt.

Yes. The Real ID Deadline has been extended to May 3, 2023.

If I renew online will I get the Gold Star?
Yes. All MS driver licenses and ID’s are Real ID compliant and will automatically have the Gold Star.

What steps are being taken to secure the safety of customers and staff?
The Driver Service Bureau is adhering to social distancing guidelines with 6ft distance requirements at all locations. All DSB staff are required to wear masks while interacting with the public. Hand sanitizer has been placed throughout all buildings for staff and customers to use.
